---- SALASPILS MEMORIAL ----
Undeniably, Salaspils is one of those towns in Latvia which has preserved the largest amount of evidences about battles in this area during different periods of time, especially – the World War I and the World War II. In that connection the most outstanding memorial place is Salaspils Memorial Ensemble which is situated between the railway stations Dole and Dārziņi, at a distance of 500 m from the railway.
Site of Nazi concentration camp, "Kurtenhof", built in 1941 and used for 3 years during the Nazi occupation of Latvia in WWII. Over 100,000 men, women and children were put to death here.
In this concentration camp have been stirred up thousands of Byelorussians, Ukrainians, Lithuanians, Latvians, Russians, Poles, Chezhs, Serbians, Estonians and Jews.
The memorial was erected in 1967 by the Russians to honor the persons who died here. A huge concrete wall in the shape of a long hollow cement beam marks the position of the former entrance, symbolizing the border between life and death. You can walk inside the beam and look out at the sculptures. The seven sculptures which stand in the grounds evoke the suffering but also the spirit of defiance and resistance of those imprisoned and killed.
